Hands-On Horse Dreams
From Ponies to Olympics
Letterfrom the editor
I
love the photo of Kat Fuqua on our cover with Somekindawonderful, known as Ronald.
Kat showed Ronald, owned by Elizabeth Reilly at the time, during Kat’s successful pony career
and the adorable pony will always hold a spot in her heart. While Kat now competes horses in
hunters, equitation and derbies, a new world opened up to her during the pandemic: dressage.
With her new dressage dance partner, DreamGirl, Kat is working her way up the levels and
has already earned her USDF Bronze and Silver medals. Kat has big dreams for her dressage
career, and is prepared for all the hard work that comes with it. Kat certainly knows about hard
work, from her non-stop show life — this year she’s even added show jumping to her schedule —
to early mornings working at her farm to care for her horses.
I’ve enjoyed getting to know Kat and I believe her dreams and goals will come true. Horses
are clearly her passion, in and out of the saddle, and I’m eager to see her live out her dreams —
and which of all the disciplines will take her there.
There are many different routes to fulfilling dreams. If you watched the television show
“The Monkees” then you may be familiar with Davy Jones — entertainer, teen idol and frontman
of the pop group The Monkees. Davy had big dreams of becoming a jockey, but once he was
“discovered” his life changed.
Davy passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on through his daughters. I’m excited to
introduce three of his four daughters to you in this issue, Sarah Jones McFadden, Talia
Jones Roston and Annabel Jones, who are devoted to caring for the horses their dad left
behind. Knowing his love for horses, they established the Davy Jones Equine Memorial
Foundation (DJEMF).
Davy became a household name due to his Monkees fame rather than as a winning
jockey, but horses were never far from his heart: His stardom ultimately enabled him to
pursue all his equestrian dreams, too. I think you’ll love learning more about Davy and
his daughters who are working hard to continue their father’s dreams.
Speaking of hard work, dressage rider Ben Ebeling has achieved a lot in his young career.
Ben grew up at his family’s Moorpark, California, training facility surrounded by horses
and a hunger for success. Although his father, Jan Ebeling, competed at the 2012 London
Olympics, Ben was drawn to show jumping and found success in the show jumping ring.
But when he decided to switch to dressage, his big equestrian dreams came with him.
At just 21 years old, Ben was selected to compete in the 2021 Olympic trials with his
mount, Illuster Van de Kampert. Following the Olympic Selection Event, Ben was
chosen as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team. “It is such an honor,”
Ben said of his Olympic alternate position.
This is our annual Pony Issue, so make sure to check out our Pony Guide for fun things to
buy and read all the ads congratulating pony and junior riders who all have big dreams and goals.
Those goals may look different, and their paths certainly will be — but here’s to hoping all their
dreams come true.

What an honor to share my story
with Sidelines magazine (“Dominic Gibbs:
National Champion With a Colorado Heart”
by Britney Grover) and see my photo on the
cover with Cent 15! Thank you, Britney Grover,
for taking the time to talk with me, listen to
our funny family stories and turn them into
something people would read — from the
faraway prairie to winning the Maclay! Thank
you, SAS Equine Photography, for the beautiful

thing feel so easy. I am grateful for so many

I am very excited for the future. Thank you to
my sister Jordan for riding along with me on this
journey, and to my brother Patrick who puts up
with all the horsing around. I am most grateful
to my parents — for my mom’s love of the horse
and for my dad saying “yes” to chasing a dream.
