I
love the photo of Brandi Cyrus on our cover this month—her love for horses shines right through the
camera lens. I also loved getting to know Brandi. Her passion for horses is evident when you talk to
her, and, like most equestrians, she has had wonderful adventures with her horses. From Pony Club to
riding on her collegiate equestrian team, Brandi’s life revolves around horses.
Brandi has competed successfully on the “A” hunter-jumper circuit for many years and is currently
showing her mare Starpower in the Low Amateur/Owner jumpers. Brandi bought Starpower from
Europe after seeing a video of her, and that was just the beginning of their adventure together.
Brandi has a busy life outside of the horse world. The daughter of singer Billy Ray Cyrus and sister
to Miley, Brandi is a talented musician, a DJ and co-host of two popular weekly podcasts. Billy Ray put
Brandi on a horse, bareback, when she was 5—and Brandi said that was all it took. She has been obsessed
with horses ever since. I think you’ll enjoy getting to know Brandi and her genuine love for horses.
Horses have taken Tiffany Morrissey on quite an adventure also. Tiffany runs East Wind Farms
in Florida, currently home to 47 show horses, and her husband, Matt, is the director of Morrissey
Management Group, producing shows such as their own Traverse City Horse Shows. The couple
has a daughter, Matty, and together they are a horse show family that enjoys adventures at the barn
and on the road.
While Tiffany works a lot, she said she and Matt are focused on enjoying time together with Matty,
which includes traveling and beach adventures. As a mother, Tiffany has learned that adventures
come in all forms, including the first time Matty jumped a pole and the pony cantered out. Read
Tiffany’s story to find out her reaction, which included Tiffany jumping a fence and running into the
ring—an adventure Tiffany wasn’t expecting!
Dressage rider Heather Bender has had enough horse adventures in her life to write several
books. From trick riding to shark diving, Heather makes the most of life. I found Heather’s story
fascinating and loved her quote, “When you set a goal, the journey is what you make of it.”
Heather’s horse adventure began before she could walk when her father put her in the saddle.
From working with famous animal trainers to trick riding and becoming a winning barrel racer by
the time she was 12, adventure should be Heather’s middle name.
“Growing up on a ranch in Camarillo, California, I would sneak out at night and go riding in
the hills bareback or jump in our arena under the moonlight. I rode all summer and would log how
many hours a day I rode, sometimes reaching 75 hours a week,” Heather said.
Don’t miss Heather’s story, as it might be the catalyst to spark some adventure in your life.
Throughout all the stories in this issue, it’s easy to see that being involved with horses is an
adventure in and of itself.
If you’re looking for adventure and you don’t have a horse in your life at the moment, then sign
up for riding lessons, volunteer at a therapeutic riding center or dog adoption center (dogs can also
take us on wonderful adventures), or attend a horse show to watch riders warming up for their classes
and listen to their trainers’ advice.
Life in the equestrian world is definitely an adventure; I hope you enjoy it!
