The New Year Brings Hope and New

t’s hard to believe that 2023 is here! I’m so excited to have Cassie Kahle on the cover this month,
as her life this past year has been all about new beginnings. Cassie has an extraordinary story that
you don’t want to miss. It’s about tragedy, strength and hope! Cassie has been a horse girl her
whole life and competed in hunters, derbies and Grand Prix show jumping. She even competed the
stallion Corragio, who appears on the cover with her.
A year ago, Cassie and a mare she was competing had a fall at an oxer, and the accident left Cassie
with a traumatic brain injury. She spent 18 days in a coma, and it was touch and go. “I don’t remember the
accident, or the week leading up to the accident—it’s just non-existent for me. It’s my blip,” Cassie said.
Having your life turned upside down is difficult, but Cassie has persevered on her road to
recovery—and she recently returned to riding. Thanks to her family, the equestrian world and a
wonderful therapist at Kessler Rehabilitation Center, Cassie is hopeful that 2023 will be a year filled
with blessings—and my hope for her is that the blessings will be many.
Texas dressage rider Katie Jackson is another rider who had her life turned upside down. Life was
going great for Katie: She had a thriving career, a loving husband and wonderful horses, and she was
looking forward to the future. Then, a cancer diagnosis and ensuing amputation shook her world.
I can’t wait for you to read Katie’s story and discover how she found strength and healing through
horses. Upon returning to riding, Katie has competed alongside able-bodied dressage riders and
also in para-dressage.
Katie’s journey has brought her wisdom, and she truly believes horses are the best therapists.
“They kept me mentally strong throughout my surgery and recovery,” she said. “When life turned
me on my head, there was nothing better for me than to be at the barn. Horses are the most
incredible partners to have.”
Three-day eventer Daniela “Danny” Moguel, who grew up in Mexico, also knows the joy of
new beginnings. When Danny’s parents sent her to Tryon, North Carolina, after high school to
become a working student, it changed the trajectory of her life—which resulted in her becoming
the first Mexican event rider to compete at the FEI World Equestrian Games.
I think you’ll love Danny’s story as she follows her dreams from Mexico to the States, where she
not only found success but met the love of her life.
I hope 2023 will be your year for new beginnings—buy your dream horse, rescue a dog, donate
to a horse rescue, enter a horse show … and the list goes on! I would also love for you to follow
Sidelines every month, so I’m offering you a special gift—a one-year subscription for half price
(about the price of a fancy coffee drink!). Visit the Sidelines website, sidelinesmagazine.com, click

Happy New Year!
