t’s hard to believe a new year is here—time really does fly. I always love our January

Breeding and Stallion issue because it means we get to look at cute foals, adorable ponies

and gorgeous horses.

I’m excited to have Barbara Chappell of Colt Hills Farm, based in in Warrenton, Virginia,

on the cover with her own Cadlanvalley Glimmer. What a gorgeous pony! In 2023, Glimmer

won the Princess Diana Memorial Cup at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto,

Canada, for being the highest-scoring stallion imported and showing in the Welsh Pony and

Cob Society of America (WPCSA) shows.

Barbara has an amazing story and I loved getting to know her, including her life growing

up and how she started her breeding program. Her granddaughter, Beverly, is following

in Barbara’s footsteps and loves all things ponies. I love seeing the horse bug passed down

through the generations.

You’ll also get to meet Leslie Butzer of Ponies & Palms Show Stables, a pony breeding

operation based in Boca Raton, Florida. Leslie also shares her pony passion and business

with her family, including a husband and daughter who are veterinarians and an amateur

equestrian daughter.

Leslie has a fascinating story that includes cloning her famous stallion Rico Suavé. Wait till

you see the photo of Rico Suavé and Rico Suavé II. I enjoyed getting to know Leslie, and I’m

sure you will also, including her method for producing child-friendly ponies.

I’m also excited for you to meet Vicky Castegren and her Hyperion Stud in Barboursville,

Virginia. Vicky’s success is evident in the fact that two of her horses have made Olympic

teams—and in different disciplines. Imothep competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio in show

jumping, and Off The Record made the team for Paris last year with eventer Will Coleman.

She has also produced approved stallions, elite mares and champion foals for eventing,

dressage and show jumping.

As we move into the New Year, I hope everyone will fall in love with one of our equine

friends. From ponies to horses, no matter the size, they all make our lives better. If you don’t

have your own, then volunteer at a horse rescue, start taking riding lessons, or sign up to help

at a therapeutic riding program. And don’t forget to start the New Year off right by getting

your own subscription to Sidelines—what a great way to ring in the New Year!

LettersTo THE EDITOR

I am very honored to have been featured as

the Sidelines 2024 Hot Horseman of the Year

(“Marcus Orlob: Luck, Opportunity and Olympic

Dressage” by Laura Scaletti). 2024 has been an

extraordinary year for me. I am so happy that

my article has resonated with so many of your

readers. I believe that oftentimes we only see

the end product of a horse/rider combination

in forums like the Olympics or WEG, without

having any idea of the backstory as to who they

are or how they got there. I appreciate Sidelines

for giving me the opportunity to share my journey

and explain all the hard work and dedication that

goes into being a professional equestrian—it’s not

something that happens overnight! Our sport is

very humbling, especially being fortunate enough

to work with our equine partners at any level.

I hope my story inspires equestrians from all

disciplines to follow their dreams, because they

do come true. I am proof of it! Thank you again,

Sidelines, for this privilege!

—Marcus Orlob

I am very proud of Marcus and his

accomplishments (“Marcus Orlob: Luck,

Opportunity and Olympic Dressage” by

Laura Scaletti)!

—Maurine Swanson

I am wholeheartedly honored to have shared

my story with an equestrian publication that

requires zero introduction: Sidelines and their

special December 2024 Issue (“Madelyn

Houser: Turning Grief Into Gain for Others”

by Kimberly Gatto)! This is SUCH a pinch-me

moment! A true highlight of not only my year,

but my entire almost-10-year journey with The

Blonde & The Bay (TB&TB).

Sidelines gave this everyday horsewoman an

opportunity to convey a very different side of

what life can sometimes look like with horses

on a grander scale than just social media. To

see Blue and his inspiration behind my Quarter

Horse & Stock Breeds dressage clinics earn this

recognition is simply beyond words, too.

My sincerest gratitude to all who made this

feature possible. Jan Westmark Bauer, Kimberly

Gatto, Kristie Nichols Scholten—thank you

for believing in my story, my heart and my own

untraditional experiences as an equestrian. Of

course, none of this would be possible without

my fabulous TB&TB community.

—Madelyn Houser

I just read the entire article (“Madelyn Houser:

Turning Grief Into Gain for Others” by

Kimberly Gatto) …WOW! Gotta say though,

girl, it had me in tears all over again. So proud

of you!

—Connie Meredith

Love this so much (“Madelyn Houser: Turning

Grief Into Gain for Others” by Kimberly Gatto)!

You’re such an inspiration for all!

—Brittany Burson

Beyond proud (“Madelyn Houser: Turning

Grief Into Gain for Others” by Kimberly Gatto).

You’re incredible and deserve all the best things.

—Nellie Schmidt

The article was so good and inspiring to accept

what comes our way and continue on toward my

goals in dressage (“Madelyn Houser: Turning

Grief Into Gain for Others” by Kimberly Gatto).

—Helen Fox

This Month’s issue of Sidelines is the always-

doing what they love! Thanks Caleb Meyer,

Rick Silvia, Evan Holt and Ricardo Romero!

—Adrienne Morella

part of their Hot Horsemen 2024 feature (“2024

—Nicky Galligan

Thank you, Will Mitchell, for always going

above and beyond (“2024 Hot Horsemen: Will

Mitchell”). I know if you are doing something

with the ring we are showing in, it’s gonna be a

good day! Thank you for making us smile and

as always, that helpful reminder to just go have

some fun!

—Kimberly Paige Guthrie
