he start of a new year seems to me the perfect time to focus on stallions and breeding,
and not just because it’s breeding season: Breeding is very future-focused, with careful
planning and investment fueling hopes and dreams. As we start this year, I find myself
thinking perhaps more than ever about the future and its possibilities. When I started at Sidelines as
an unpaid intern 10 years ago, I never dreamed I would now be taking on the role of editor. But like
the breeders in this issue, I’m confident and excited about our future.
Fun fact: I’ve lived in Utah most of my life but have never been skiing. Carone Stucky told me
I need to go, because Utah has the best snow on earth—and she knows fun! Her stallion Triple
Gold, who’s on the cover with her this month, is a blast just to watch and Carone says he’s even
more fun in person. They’re hoping to impact the future of the sport with Triple Gold’s offspring,
who already took him to the top of the US Equestrian Leading Hunter Breeding Sires list last
year. She sent me several videos of him jumping and said, “Thought you could use a laugh.” Well, I
didn’t laugh—even though Triple Gold was clearing the jumps by probably a foot, he and his jump
were just too pretty to laugh at!
Something that did make me laugh as we were preparing this issue, however, was Chapin
Cheska’s pet chicken, Corn. “She’s quite the character,” Chapin told me. “We have three Labs
and she thinks she’s the fourth!” I enjoyed reading how, at 16, Chapin stumbled into handling her
stallion, Kentucky Van’t Ruytershof, for all his collections. She’s among the rising generation of
horsewomen with a bright future ahead, and I love that even in this day and age, she was raised
riding bareback and fishing off her pony.
Speaking of ponies, Reva Danzig Moore has pastures full of them at her Greymeadows Farm
in Cutler, Ohio. She invited me and my 7-year-old daughter out to visit them if we’re ever out that
way—and offered to hook me up if my daughter needs a pony! Since my daughter and I are a family
of two at present, Reva’s story of finding a shared passion for breeding with her mother, Cathy
Comerci, also as a mother-daughter family, hit close to my heart. They went from choosing acreage
with no home to the renowned and successful pony breeding operation Greymeadows Farm is
today, with many ponies competing at Pony Finals and Pony Hunter National Championships—
and the promise of many up-and-coming ponies shaping not just their future, but the futures of the
children who ride them.
With breeding, just like in life, things don’t always go as expected: Sometimes there are
disappointments. Sometimes, things go even better than we ever dreamed. I think you’ll find
examples of both in this issue, along with many equestrians who know that the journey is the
destination: It’s not about the result, it’s about the joy of getting there.
Whether this year brings you a new foal or a new goal, expected triumphs or unexpected trials,
may you enjoy the journey towards a bright future.
