very year I look forward to the Pony and Junior issue because our equestrian world is

filled with amazing young people—some very young—who have great stories, great

accomplishments and multiple accolades to their names. And this issue is just that—

story after story of pony and Junior riders who are making the equestrian world strong.

I’m excited to have Ellie Goodfriend on our cover. At 16 years old, Ellie has found success

in the show ring, but it took great strength to get there. Ellie was plagued with seizures that

left the doctors stumped and threatened her dreams of riding and showing. A trip to Boston

Children’s Hospital discovered the problem, and the solution was brain surgery.

It wasn’t an easy road, but she is now recovered and back in the ring. Ellie’s is a story of

perseverance, and with two great horses she has her sights set on someday qualifying for

Maclay, NCEA, WIHS and Jumpseat Finals. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know her.

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for ponies—so I love our story on 11-year-old pony

rider Audrina McCall. With her adorable pony, Greymeadows Colby, Audrina competes

in pony jumpers, but she doesn’t stop there. Audrina is also active in Pony Club, eventing,

foxhunting and vaulting. She’s one busy pony rider!

I visited Audrina at her farm earlier this year and I loved watching her taking care of the

horses and ponies in the barn. Her Pony Club training certainly shines through everything

she does, which makes the future of our sport look great. If you have a young person in your

life who has the opportunity to join Pony Club, jump at the chance. Pony Club isn’t just for

young riders—adults can also join!

I’m also pleased to share Ryan Haselden’s story in this issue. She’s a 14-year-old Junior rider

you may have heard of—from her accomplishments in the ring to a scary event a few months

ago when her heart stopped while she was competing in a jumper class at Fox Lea Farm in

Venice, Florida.

Thankfully, EMTs and an emergency doctor jumped in to help, and the show had an

automated external defibrillator (AED)—and Ryan’s life was saved. I think you’ll enjoy

getting to know Ryan and trust me, she is much more than her heart-stopping story. Ryan

travels the world to compete as a show jumper, and her need for speed doesn’t stop there—

she’s also working on earning her pilot’s license.

Pull up your tack trunk and sit back and enjoy the stories in this issue. I hope you’ll feel as

confident as I do as you meet each rider—the future of the horse world is bright thanks to

these talented pony and Junior riders.

Sidelines is excited to feature Jaxon Hoshaw’s story

in this issue. Jaxon is only 17, but his dreams are

big and his future is bright! Thanks to Sidelines

photographer Kacy Brown for Jaxon’s photos.

So glad to have Laura Scaletti as part of the

Sidelines team. Laura is a talented writer and also

a talented rider. Laura competed with her horse

Red Horizon at the 2025 Devon Horse Show

and Country Fair.

Sidelines writer Helen Townes enjoyed her trip

to the 2025 Devon Horse Show and Country

Fair. Looks like Helen was getting ready to shop

till she dropped. How fun!

Sidelines visited Balsam Mountain Preserve in

Sylva, North Carolina, to catch up with Lila

Kilby, who runs their equestrian center and was

featured in our May issue. If you’re looking for

a place with cool weather to spend the summer

with your horses, Balsam Mountain Preserve is

the place to be! Jerry Bauer, right, even enjoyed

a riding lesson and trail ride.

Don’t miss Ryan Haselden’s story in this issue—

it’s definitely a must-read. From left to right, Will

Haselden, Lindsay Haselden, Ryan Haselden

and Sidelines photographer Kacy Brown. We

love that Kacy color-coordinated with the

Haselden family!

It looks like Sidelines photographer Kacy Brown,

second from left, was having a great time taking

photos of the stars of the Horse & Country

reality show “Riding with the Reddens.” From

left to right Abigail Bennett, Kacy, Emma

Redden and Annie Bennett.

Several years ago Sidelines did a story on Mary

Adams, right, the founder of The Sanctuary at

Red Bell Run in Columbus, North Carolina.

Recently, Sidelines Editor-In-Chief Jan Westmark

Bauer returned to visit Mary and was happy to

meet Red Bell staff member Shannon Mahony,

left, and Shelby Ann, a big draft molly mule also

known as “The Queen of Red Bell Run!”

Sidelines has arrived at the Salamander Hotel

in Middleburg, Virginia! Equestrian manager

Buddy, taking a break from their busy schedule

to catch up on some reading.

he Redden Family has always adopted

a “go big or go home” attitude, so it

wasn’t surprising when their daughter

and two nieces began taking horseback riding

lessons that they jumped in feet first. Less than

one year after that first lesson, the Reddens had

a barn full of horses and were the stars of their

own real-world television series. Now in pre-

production for season three, “Riding with the

Reddens” focuses on navigating the intricacies of

the equestrian world, as three young riders chase

their five-star dreams.

Their love affair with horses began when the

global COVID-19 pandemic shut down film

studios on the West Coast. Summer Redden

and her daughter Emma—a rising actor already

working in television and theater—returned

to their family compound in Chattanooga,

Tennessee, to quarantine with their Aunt

Autumn and cousins Abigail and Annie. “All

three girls are home schooled and quickly found

themselves with too much free time on their

hands,” Summer said. “We’re not horse people,

so when they begged for lessons, my husband,

Jeremiah, and I were a bit apprehensive.”

Looking For a Leg Up

Emma began her riding journey at a hunter-

jumper barn, whereas Abigail and Annie started

off in the eventing world. “I was older than most

kids starting out, and the barn staff assumed I

knew more than I did,” Emma said. “Someone

would ask me to grab a girth and I literally had

no idea what they meant.”

In that moment, Summer saw an

opportunity. “I asked if we could take a video

of someone properly tacking up a horse. That

way, we would have a great reference point—

and who knows—maybe even help someone

else!” she said. “That’s truly how the idea for

our show came to fruition; I wanted to help

other first-time horse families.”

It wasn’t long before Emma decided to try

eventing. “It really freaked us out as parents,

especially not knowing anything about

horses,” Summer said. “Being in a ring seemed

controlled, but now they were going to be

in a cross-country field and jumping natural

obstacles.”

To help ease their fears, Summer and

Jeremiah insist the girls wear air vests, safety
