elcome to our October issue. I’m excited to have show jumper Skylar Wireman on the
cover this month. I always love a mother-daughter story, and that’s exactly what Skylar
has. Skylar grew up in California with her mother, Shayne Berridge Wireman, and
together they run their farm that Shayne bought when she was just 20 years old. In addition to her
mom, Skylar also has many supporters behind her—her village of friends and supporters.
I think you’ll enjoy getting to know Skylar. Her life started with riding ponies and has grown over
the years and taken her on many exciting adventures—some good, and some not so good, since they
have included major injuries. Early this year Skylar, at only 19 years old, had her first opportunity to
put on the pinque USET coat as she competed on the United States Show Jumping team at the
2024 World Cup Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Through it all, Skylar has had a village behind her. Although Skylar’s mother has been her trainer
from the time Skylar was small, Skylar has been fortunate to have many top equestrians on her side,
including champion hunter rider Nick Haness, Olympic show jumper Peter Wylde and many more.
A good village is there for highs and lows, cheering at the sidelines or caring at a hospital bedside.
I’m also excited to have dressage rider Erin Nichols in this issue. Erin has a great story, which also
started with a mom involved in the horse world. Erin grew up riding in Pony Club, was exposed to
many disciplines and competed in show jumping and dressage at the same time. Though she found
both to be exciting, Erin’s world now revolves around dressage.
In 2022, Erin had her first opportunity to ride in Europe on a United States team. “Riding for
Team USA is such a unique experience,” she said. Erin is another young rider who has a village
behind her—and her village extends far and wide. A village can come together from anywhere, and
Erin has made friends around the world.
I can’t wait for you to read eventer Mallory Hogan’s story. Mallory has competed to the CCI4*
level in eventing, and remarkably she has done it with just one horse, Clarissa, whom Mallory calls
her rock. “Everyone in this sport says that it takes a village, and it cannot be more true,” Mallory said,
adding that she has an amazing village, most notably, her parents.
A good village will support you no matter what direction your dreams take you. While Mallory has
just started law school, she said that won’t stop her from riding, and I know her village will be behind
her all the way.
My hope for everyone is to have a village of their own—whether it’s made up of family, friends or
trusted professionals. If you’re part of a barn family, big or small, make it your goal to have them be
your village. If you don’t have a barn, find a horse or dog rescue or a therapeutic riding center where
you can volunteer; your village could be waiting for you there!

When I met Kate Murphy I was so profoundly
impressed that an emergency room nurse who
saved people during the pandemic has found a
new passion—and way to heal people, too—in
horses. Sidelines magazine agreed with me,

ERIN
NICHOLS
EQUESTRIAN EXPERIENCES
AROUND THE WORLD
By Laura Scaletti
Portraits by Melissa Fuller
rowing up in Yorba Linda, California,
Erin Nichols didn’t need to make
the trek to Disneyland to find her
“Happiest Place on Earth;” All she needed to
do was head to the barn. With a mother, Diane
Nichols, who has her USDF Bronze medal, Erin
didn’t take long to make the barn her happy place.
“From the moment I was born, I spent all my
time at the barn with my mom, helping her get
ready for her lessons and feeding. My mom is my
biggest supporter. Since she knows a lot about
horses, she can relate and understand the sport
and all the emotions that come with it,” Erin
said. “She’s been with me on my journey every
step of the way. We travel everywhere together
for shows, including Europe.”
That journey began when Erin was 4 years
old and sat in the saddle for the first time. When
she was in kindergarten, her family purchased
Velvet, her first pony. By 2012 when Erin was
turning 9, she was competing with Velvet in
intro level dressage and jumper shows.
Erin credits Pony Club with exposing her to
so many disciplines and giving her important
horse management skills she uses in the sport
today. “I was very lucky that we had a Pony
Club near my home in Yorba Linda. Pony Club
offered both show jumping and dressage lessons
as well as occasional cross-country clinics. It
provided me with such an amazing foundation
for horse care and riding,” Erin said. “I have
lifelong friendships and fond memories of
growing up in Pony Club.”
Pony Club camps were the pinnacle of
fun for Erin growing up. “We had lots of
activities, riding lessons with clinicians, horse
management lessons and we camped right
outside of the barn. At the end of the camp, we
would have a game day where we played various
