What is your favorite thing about
the horse you’re competing?
My favorite thing about Nirvana is the way
he greets me. Every time I walk into the
barn, he nickers as soon as he sees me, and
that small gesture makes me feel the depth
of our connection. It’s a reminder that the
partnership we’ve built is real and mutual. One
of the most special things about him is how
much he loves children. We have several kids
at the barn between the ages of four and seven,
and Nirvana lowers his head to their height
and stays completely relaxed while they pet
him, or simply spend time with him. Watching
a powerful Grand Prix horse soften himself
so naturally to meet children at their level is
extraordinary. It says everything about his
kindness, his intelligence and the heart behind
the athleticism.
What’s one thing your horse has taught
you throughout your partnership?
Nirvana has taught me to trust myself enough
to relax and let him do his job. He’s the kind of
horse who reminds me, in his own way, “I’ve
got this.” Learning not to override him—to
give him space to show his confidence and
ability—has made me a better, quieter and
more thoughtful rider. He’s taught me that
partnership is about trust.
What do you like to do
when you’re not riding?
When I’m not riding, I love to garden. I have
an extensive vegetable and flower garden, and
sharing what I grow with my students at the
farm is one of my favorite things. I also have
ducks who make me laugh every day and give
me beautiful eggs that I enjoy—or pass along to
my students. They’re a small, joyful part of my
life outside the barn.
